Total Dissolved Solids

  • Total Dissolved Solids, also known as TDS, are inorganic compounds that are found in water such as salts, heavy metals and some traces of organic compounds that are dissolved in water.
  • Total Dissolved Solids, also known as TDS, are inorganic compounds that are found in water such as salts, heavy metals and some traces of organic compounds that are dissolved in water.
  • Excluding the organic matters that are sometimes naturally present in water and the environment, some of these compounds or substances can be essential in life. But, it can be harmful when taken more than the desired amount needed by the body.
  • The total dissolved solids present in water are one of the leading causes of turbidity and sediments in drinking water. When left unfiltered, total dissolved solids can be the cause of various diseases.
  • A total dissolved solid (TDS) is a measure of the combined total of organic and inorganic substances contained in a liquid. This includes anything present in water other than the pure H20 molecules. These solids are primarily minerals, salts and organic matter that can be a general indicator of water quality.

CHART FOR TDS OF DRINKING WATER ACCORDING TO TASTE
TDS LEVEL (MG/L) RATING
Less than 300 Excellent
300-600 Good
600-900 Fair
900-1200 Poor
Above 1200 Unacceptable

How to Reduce the TDS in Water?

  • There are a lot of RO water purifiers available online that can reduce or remove the Dissolved salts in the water.
  • The most widely used Water Purification Systems are Carbon filtration, Reverse Osmosis, Distillation, and Decolonization.
  • In Carbon filtration, the Charcoal consumes many toxic compounds when the water is passed through the activated charcoal.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis is one of the most commonly used filtration systems that removes all the dissolved contaminants in the water. The Only problem with RO is, It needs a lot of water.

The RO process splits the water into two parts and drives the dissolved salts out from the part into other.

As I mentioned above, Reverse osmosis requires a lot of water, and the wastage is also high.

If you input 3 Liters of Water into the RO Process, you will get one liter of Clean water and 2 liters of Dirty water.

So, when you are planning to buy a Ro Water Filter, Make sure you collect the dirty water and use it for cleaning the house. Don’t waste the Reject Water of Reverse Osmosis purification system.

The Cost of the RO Water Purifiers ranges from ₹8,000 to ₹15,000.

Please note that the Normal Ro Water Purifiers might not perform Good when the TDS level of the water is in thousands.

Distillation

distillation

Distillation involves boiling the water and produce the water vapor that rises to a cooler surface and condensed back to liquid. Distillation is one of the oldest forms of water purification which is still used to convert the sea water to drinking water.

I am scientist

I am scientist is a result of small effort to make huge impact on children. To stimulate the curiosity of young scientist towards science. Each idea will start with a experiment followed by reasoning the result , scientific learning, vocabulary (recap the big words used), useful reference website and books, along with free downloadable worksheets.
